Germany scores with North Rhine-Westphalia Vol. 2
O tomto podujatí
North Rhine-Westphalia (the locals call it “NRW”) offers plenty career opportunities for qualified Physiotherapists. NRW is the economic heart of Germany, an important industrial state. The healthcare sector is growing steadily and is regarded as a driver of innovation with significant employment potential.
With 18 million inhabitants, NRW is the most populous and also the most densely populated state in Germany.
Here in NRW, we have many years of experience with a colourful mix of nationalities. More than 3.27 million people with an immigrant background from over 190 different countries live and work in North Rhine-Westphalia. Located in the west of Germany, NRW features 30 of the 81 German municipalities with over 100,000 inhabitants, including Cologne (over 1 million), the state capital Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen (all about 600,000 inhabitants) and other cities predominantly located in the Rhine Ruhr metropolitan area, the largest urban area in Germany and the fourth-largest on the European continent.
Here, imposing industrial monuments stand alongside relaxing landscape parks, elegant shopping streets alternate with urban metropolitan oases. Cosmopolitanism and creativity characterise the attitude towards life in NRW.
North Rhine-Westphalia is regarded as Germany's number one sporting country because it is a place where broad-based and top-level sports come together in a particularly strong way. With around 18,000 sports clubs and over 5 million members, NRW has the largest sports base in the country. In football, traditional clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln has played the Bundesliga for decades. The infrastructure is also outstanding: the Signal Iduna Park (over 80,000 seats) and arenas such as the Veltins Arena and the RheinEnergieStadion are among the most important venues in Europe. This mix makes NRW the most important sporting venue in Germany.

Five steps to Germany for physiotherapists – recognition and language is a must
Five steps to Germany for physiotherapists – recognition and language is a must
1. Find your future employer
„Germany scores with Northrhine-Westphalia“ offers jobs for qualified Physiotherapists in Germany.
The employers are supportive for international candidates and offering job interviews online.
Many employers are willing to meet and/or hire candidates without B2 German language skills (Candidates must be willing to learn the german language) and candidates that didn`t start the recognition process yet.
2. Recognition
Important to know: Physiotherapist is a legally regulated profession in Germany, requiring state authorization (Staatliche Anerkennung) to practice. Foreign-trained therapists must obtain recognition of their qualifications. (More information on recognition for Physiotherapists in NRW.)
In most cases, international Physiotherapists will recieve a partial recognition (Teilanerkennung). Practical and theoretical hours must still be completed (and in some cases including an external exam).
Planning adaptation qualification: The Federal Agency for Labor may fund certain (certified) courses up to 100% as well as reimburse much of the salary for absence from work („Beschäftigtenqualifizierung“).
Non-EU-candidates will need a Visa to work in Germany (make-it-in-germany.com). Please also check section: Information for non-EU/EEAcandidates on this website.
Shortcuts to recognition:
- EU candidates can use European Professional Card - EPC for the recognition process.
- For non-EU-candidates the future employer in Germany can use the Beschleunigte Fachkräfteverfahren for recognition and visa process.
3. Arriving in Germany with a work contract
We recommend to finish German language courses, recognition process and visa process before arriving, so in most cases work contract and qualification courses start shortly after your arrival.
Some employers at „Germany scores with Northrhine-Westphalia“ may offer benefits for their new international employees (e.g. flight cost, housing, integration support).
4. Adaptation qualification (if needed)
Theory takes place in a school. Much of the practice can be completed at your employers place of work (working as a “physiotherapist in recognition”). The course ends with a final interview or an official external examination.
5. Professional licence (Berufserlaubnis)
Has the course been completed successfully? Now you have to apply for the professional certificate from the city, which can take several weeks. Your B2 language certificate must be demonstrated.
With the certificate you are allowed to work as a physiotherapist in Northrhine-Westphalia.

Citizens of countries which do not belong to the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, need a residence document in order to enter and stay in Germany. Access to the German labour market is determined by the provisions of the Residence Act (AufenthG) and the Employment Regulation (BeschV) pertaining to it.
Different residence documents are issued depending on the duration and purpose of the stay. There are seven different residence documents based on the Residence Act: the visa, the residence permit, the EU Blue Card, the EU permanent residence permit, the ICT-Card, the Mobile-ICT-Card and the settlement permit.
Generally people wanting to enter Germany for the first time in order to take up work, must apply for a visa from the relevant German embassy or consulate in their country of origin, before entering Germany. It is important to select the right visa type for the intended purpose.
Citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Great Britain and Northern Ireland or the USA may also enter Germany without a visa and apply for a residence permit in Germany directly before taking up employment.
Before the visa expires, a residence document for the purpose of employment must be applied for from the relevant immigration authority. If a national visa (type-D visa) was issued by the embassy the employment can be taken up immediately. Nevertheless a registration at the competent authorities - citizens' centre as well as foreigners registration office - should be done within the first three months.
Further information is available on the official website of the German government „Make it in Germany“ and the Federal Foreign Office. The official website of the Federal Foreign Office clears up with rumours about the migration to Germany.

Keep your company profile updated
This is your public introduction to potential applicants. It should cover your main activities and projects, which type of profiles you are looking for and what your organization expects from them.
To reach out to jobseekers all over Europe, add at least a small introduction in English.
You should as well add your logo – and, under the Websites section, your web and social media accounts.
If you have any videos (on Youtube or Vimeo) or images (pictures, infographics, …) which can make your profile more appealing and informative, add them to the Media Gallery. Ideally these should be recruitment-focused and in English (or subtitled in English).
How to register / improve a company profile
Review your applicants and invite them for an interview
Jobseekers are applying for your jobs. You can pre-select some for online interviews.
Once you are logged in, go to Job Applications, where you will find an overview of all applications. To check their CVs, click on the Ongoing job applications tab. Click on the job applicant's name, go through the profile and check the attached CV or online profile. If it matches your requirements, call him/her for an online interview.
Pre-define your availability for interviews on the same page by clicking on the Set timeslots button. By default, the time slots are 30 minutes. If you have several colleagues engaged during the event day, you can set up to 5 interviews per slot and assign them to different recruiters.
The applicants you invite will choose the time that suits them best from those you have available. Your schedule is automatically updated when applicants confirm their presence.
You can check and download your interview agenda at any time from the Job Applications, Scheduled tab, to know who to meet via the platform's video chat (Jitsi) on each day and time. You can also download applicants' CVs.
