The Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in the project “Photonics innovation”. The project aims at developing a spin-out company based on DTU IPR in the field of photonics, with a focus on life science technologies. The project is in collaboration with Herlev-Gentofte Hospital, department of Urology. DTU Fotonik leads the development of technology and innnovation, and Herlev-Gentofte Hospital provides clinical test facilities and medical supervision.



Project description

The goal of this PhD project is to study photonics innovation and apply this in the health care industry. The project will study the implementation of multimodal, functional optical imaging (OI) technologies for probing of bladder cancer, to analyze treatment and to establish a medico spin-out company. The project will further study new business opportunities originating DTU IPR, and adapt and develop innovation models to these cases. The main topics the researcher will tackle within the project are:

•Product design development of imaging technologies; multiphoton microscopy (MPM), optical coherence microscopy (OCM), and Raman spectroscopy.

•Participation in medical studies to understanding bladder cancer cell function and biomarkers to diagnose the disease at the earliest onset.

•Study innovation cases from DTU Fotonik, adapt and develop innovation model to the cases.

•Explore new businesses cases, propose start-up teams and lead the technical development of at least one start-up company (CTO role).



Qualifications

The candidate must have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. A solid background of innovation and design is important, some knowledge of fiber optics an advantage. Good communication skills in written and spoken English is a must. Incorporation date is spring 2016.



Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. We recommend the applicants to contact the supervisors in advance to assess the suitability of the application.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for Ph.D. degree researchers. The period of employment is 3 years.
