Description de l’offre d’emploi

Lead Clinical Microbiologist, Clinical Diagnostic Department, Hospital of South-west Jutland, Esbjerg, Denmark

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated professional to fill the position of Lead Clinical Microbiologist at the Hospital of South-west Jutland from the 1st of July 2022 or by a mutually agreed starting date.

The post provides an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Clinical Microbiologist to lead and develop diagnostic microbiology services in the context of a well-equipped, modern and forward-thinking laboratory, with an enthusiastic staff. The transition to a University hospital has implications of more research and development as well as tutoring, providing excellent opportunities for the development of clinically-focused research in collaboration between laboratories and clinical partners.

You will be joining a team of four medically-qualified Clinical Microbiology Specialists (including this post), a trainee Clinical Microbiologist, a lead biomedical technician, two molecular biologists, 17 biomedical technicians, a bioinformatician, a PhD student, and two medical secretaries.

Applicants are encouraged to provide details of their current areas of special interest, and these will be accommodated as far as possible within the wider development and research objectives of the department. We are particularly interested in the continued development in the areas of rapid diagnostics, infection prevention and control, and the application of whole-genome sequencing.

All of the Clinical Microbiologists contribute to service provision, but in addition have their own particular areas of interest and responsibilities. You will be joining the Clinical Microbiology research group, currently hosting a number of projects in the areas of improvement of diagnosis and treatment, as well as healthcare-associated infection and antimicrobial resistance.

Clinical Microbiology is part of the Clinical Diagnostic Department (KDA), located on the Esbjerg campus. KDA is comprised of the specialties of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, Pathology and Clinical Microbiology together with the Infection Prevention and Control Unit (IHE). This provides excellent opportunities for synergistic co-working, coordination and sharing of common services, technologies and resources. KDA provides laboratory diagnostic services for the Region of South-West Denmarks hospitals and the Primary Care sector located within our catchment area. The Hospital of South-West Jutland in Esbjerg has been recognized for the high quality of its research and education activities, and as a part of the University Hospital of Southern Denmark, has been approved for the training and education of master students in medicine from September 2022.

Clinical Microbiology handles approximately 120,000 specimens annually and provides pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic advice on all aspects of the investigation, diagnosis and management of infection, and has a close collaboration with IHE to provide comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control services.

The specialty has a constantly updated development plan, and benefits from the latest technology. This includes the Copan WASP system for automated inoculation of cultures, and MALDI-TOF-based bacterial identification. There is also a well-equipped molecular laboratory. This has been significantly re-equipped with a number of automated, and semi-automated analysis platforms, including the Seegene Allplex, GeneXpert, Biofire FilmArray, and Illumigene systems.  These platforms deliver rapid analyses for a range of respiratory pathogens, intra-partum GBS screening, CSF and malaria. Molecular screening of fecal samples will commence this year. In addition, the laboratory has recently introduced Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis using both the Oxford Nanopore Minion/Gridion systems, and the Illumina MiSeq platforms.
