About the specialization

As a student in this specialization, you will play an essential part in the fast-expanding industry of chemical and biochemical production. Here you can work with everything from modern medicine to new ingredients for food and feed or the sustainable development of the energy and agricultural sectors.

No matter which company you work for, the industry is hungry for talented chemical engineers with specialized skills in process technology and an eye for industrial bioproduction.

During your study time, you will become an expert on process thinking and working with chemistry and biochemistry on an industrial scale.

Taught by leading experts and professors, you will learn to run a factory and work with all the industrial processes – from development and improvements to embedding new technology and digitalized optimizations.

In addition, you will gain strong engineering knowledge as well as an innovative mindset.

An Industry Master of Science in Engineering

Biomanufacturing is an industry master’s education.

To enrol, you must be employed in a biochemical or chemical production company and work at least 25 hours weekly on average.

It takes four years to complete an industry master of science in engineering, and during this time you are both a part-time engineer and a part-time student.

Structure

The specialization in Biomanufacturing is a four years programme and it consist of a mix of intensive courses and group projects.

  • 1st, 3rd, and 5th semesters are dedicated to intensive courses lasting three to five weeks. This way, you dedicate a few weeks of your semester to taking a course, leaving you to work the rest of the semester.
  • 2nd, 4th, and 6th semesters are for group projects and two intensive courses, which are mandatory for all DTU MSc students. The projects allow you to test your knowledge and collaborate closely with your fellow students on an industry-specific challenge.
  • During the 7th and 8th semesters, you will work on your MSc thesis in collaboration with your workplace.

Throughout the programme, you spend long periods working full-time.

The specialization in Biomanufacturing is developed in close collaboration with the industry and takes place at Biotech City Kalundborg.

This makes it a one-of-a-kind education, giving you a chance to both work and study in a hotspot for chemical and biochemical production.

Autumn intake only

The four-year study programme for the Biomanufacturing Specialization at Kalundborg follows a defined study plan and structure. Hence, it is only possible to follow for students admitted at the Autumn (September) intake.

Entry requirements

Step 1

Biomanufacturing is a specialization in the MSc in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. To study Biomanufacturing you must meet the entry requirements for Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.

Application and required documents

Apply to the MSc Chemical and Biochemical Engineering: How to apply

If you hold a degree acquired outside Denmark you must fill out the Statement of Purpose marking Biomanufacturing as your specialization.

If you already have a job complete the Documentation for employment agreement stating your employment status and upload it as part of your application. Do this no later than two weeks before the semester starts.

 

Step 3

Conditional admission letter

DTU will examine your application. If you meet the entry requirements, you will receive a conditional admission letter within two weeks of your application.

The letter is your proof that you have been accepted into the programme on the condition that you find a job within a biochemical or chemical production company.

Some companies might ask to see your conditional admission letter as a part of the recruitment process.

 

Step 4

Apply for a job

To study the industry master's in Biomanufacturing you must have a job within a biochemical or chemical production company.

You may attach your conditional admission letter to your job application.

Once you have a job, fill out the Documentation for employment agreement and upload it as part of your application. Do this no later than two weeks before the semester starts.
