The Department of Computer Science is an international community with 46 professors and more than 400 employees from 50 countries, the largest department at Aalto University and the largest computer science unit in Finland. The Computer Science department IT team (CS-IT) develops and maintains technology needed at the department, and supports department personnel in using it. We collaborate with the department personnel as well as IT and other specialists at Aalto and other universities. Our main educational technologies include A+, the open-source learning management system (see https://apluslms.github.io/) and Jupyter.cs, an ecosystem of tools with autograding for educational needs on Jupyter notebook platform (see https://nbgrader.readthedocs.io), as well as some course-specific in-house services and ongoing development projects. IT specialists as web software developers for educational technology needs at the CS department
For a start, your tasks will focus on the currently used educational technologies at the CS department, with responsibilities covering the range of services, and will in the future cover the scope of technologies and special focus areas needed for teaching and learning at the CS department. In this role, you have a wide responsibility in designing and implementing our large web-based solutions and will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of teaching and learning technologies within the CS department.
In this position, your tasks will include:

Development: Collaborate with your peers and academic product owners to design, develop, and implement innovative educational technologies that align with the department's goals.

Maintenance: Ensure the smooth operation and functionality of existing educational tools and platforms, making necessary updates and improvements.

Support: Provide technical support, training and instructions to faculty and teaching assistants, addressing their needs and troubleshooting issues as they arise.

Usability Enhancement: Consider the end-user experience as a crucial aspect of your development activities, striving to make educational technologies more user-friendly and efficient.
You will share the team responsibilities in the CS-IT team, proactively take and share tasks that need to be done, and act as a peer to the other developers in the team. Overall, you will have the chance to make an impact by joining the development of high-quality and modern educational technology to be used in Computer Science teaching in Finnish Higher Education.

Your experience and ambitions
The position requires versatile Full stack web development skills and experience. Knowledge, understanding and work-related experience of modern software development methods and technologies, as well as understanding of the university context, give good perspective for the position. Our techniques cover a wide range of tools, including for example Python, React, shell-scripts, SQL, Git, Docker, NodeJS. In the future, applying artificial intelligence in versatile ways in software engineering, teaching and learning will play an increasing role. In addition to technical competence, strong communication and collaboration competences, as well as proactive and responsible acting and service attitude are essential in the position. Working languages at the department are English and Finnish. Spoken and written working proficiency in English are a requirement, Finnish is considered an advantage. To successfully master these, you should have a Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
What we offer

The positions are permanent with preferred start date 1.1.2024. We work in flexible hybrid mode with on-site days at the Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland. Our remote working days are also in Finland. For the employer side we are committed to fostering your professional growth and skills development. We will provide opportunities to enhance your expertise in educational technologies e.g., in training sessions and via collaboration with our experts. The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary is approximately between 3900-4400 eur.
