In cooperation with “Det Blå Danmark”, DTU has established Maritime DTU in order to satisfy emerging technological challenges within the industry. Maritime DTU is a centre, which should coordinate and strengthen the four main missions of the university: research, education, innovation and public sector consultancy within the maritime field. Maritime DTU will also act as DTU’s contact to the Maritime Industry and also increase cooperation with other leading universities within the maritime field, both with regards to education and research.



Responsibilities and tasks

Maritime DTU is located at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The manager of the centre will be responsible for coordination of activities and daily operation of the centre in cooperation with an academic management group consisting of professors from the departments involved. At the same time, the person in question will also take part in research and education within the maritime field. The preferred candidate is expected to have experience from one or more of the following relevant subjects:

•Design and operation of maritime structures

•Energy and environmental optimization

•Maritime logistics, optimization of routes and consumption of resources

•Safety, navigation and maritime communication

•Strategic simulation and risk evaluation

•Innovation in networks in the maritime sector

•Other technology subjects with relevance to the maritime sector



The external tasks of Maritime DTU will primarily be:

•Strengthening of research cooperation with national and international universities, including joint courses and exchange of candidates, PhD students, and teachers

•Acting as a platform for financing interdisciplinary research activities

•Contact to the maritime sector

•Identification of the need for education, research and innovation in cooperation with the maritime sector

•Information to the education system including schools at all levels about maritime activities at the university.



Qualifications

Qualification requirements are:

•A PhD degree or equivalent as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc.

•Leadership and communication skills.

•Experience with innovation activities in an university environment.



It is important that the new manager of the centre is a person with the ability to cooperate and create networks, combined with an interest in and a commitment to “Det Blå Danmark”. Experience from research and education within one or more of the above mentioned topics for research and education will be an advantage.



Assessment

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

•an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience

•the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

•the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities

•proven project management experience and leadership skills

•the ability to develop strong internal and external contacts and attract external project funding

•scientific production and research potential at international level

•innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas

•experience in teaching and education

•the ability to promote and utilize research results



For the specific position, consideration will also be given to:

•Knowledge of the strategic challenges of “Det Blå Danmark”

•Working experience from a maritime company at a technical level of management

•Experience from research and/or education within the relevant fields

•The ability to co-operate

•The ability to establish and maintain national and international networks within the sector

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

DTU Mechanical Engineering covers the fundamental engineering disciplines within Solid mechanics, Fluid mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Energy systems and energy conversion, Materials and Surface Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering design and Product development. The department has a scientific staff of about 100 persons, 105 PhD students and a technical/administrative support staff of about 85 persons.
