Role Purpose
The role of the HV/MV Estimating Engineer is to perform tasks related to the technical aspects of the estimating and tendering process of Transmission & Distribution, Power, and Renewables projects. The Engineer will work with a vibrant, agile, and multi-functional team in delivering tenders on time, safely, to budget and to the required quality and technical standards.
 
As a qualified and experienced Electrical Engineering Professional, you will be responsible for carrying out preliminary electrical design and engineering activities, provide engineering and technical support to the estimating team, engage with equipment vendors, and assist with technical submissions.
 
The successful candidate will be a member of the T&D Business Unit Electrical Engineering team, reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager, whose role will involve interfacing and working with the estimating team and wider engineering team, as well as the commercial and management teams, on tenders related to projects in Ireland and the UK.

HV/MV Estimating Engineer Key Tasks / Responsibilities
 

  • Be the technical lead on estimating / tendering opportunities for the T&D department.
  • Identify value engineering and cost saving opportunities.
  • Understand the commercial fundamentals of a project.
  • Work with the estimating, engineering, construction, and commercial teams in order to prepare tender technical documents and assist with tender submissions.
  • Liaise and coordinate with sub-consultants on technical and commercial proposals in line with the requirements of a tender.
  • Actively engage with the supply chain to establish the most cost effective and innovate solutions that comply with the specifications of the client, including the review of supplier quotations and technical offers to ensure compliance.
  • Develop and build good relationships with the supply chain and sub-consultants, expanding vendor lists where possible.
  • Attend all required tender process meetings and organise and lead technical meetings as required.
  • Prepare an outline / preliminary design based on Employer Requirements, including electrical drawings, layouts, single line diagrams, cable calculations and any other required designs for input into the tender.
  • Co-ordinate the interfaces between electrical and civil engineering in conjunction with the civil engineering team during the tender process.
  • Review and understand project design specifications, identifying and quantifying associated project risks.
  • Assist in the clarification and RFI process during the tender and post-tender stage.
  • Compilation of technical submittals required for tender submissions in coordination with the lead estimator and assist in identifying any deviations and clarifications required with the tender submission.
  • Produce the electrical engineering deliverables for each tender.
  • Review the tender program from an electrical design and engineering perspective.
  • Review the electrical engineering prelims from a design and engineering perspective based on the electrical engineering deliverables.
  • Assist the Lead Estimator on the commercial proposal associated with the main electrical equipment of the tender submission.
  • Assist in the handover of a successful tender from estimating to the live project team.
  • Report any potential leads to securing new work to the business unit management.
  • Attend CPD workshops and events.
  • Mentor junior engineers and assist in their development.
  • Ensure the correct application and compliance with relevant business procedures; highlighting any non-compliance observed.
  • Conduct periodic review of work practices, identifying efficiencies, increasing productivity and reducing risk accordingly.
  • You will proactively and vigilantly keep information secure and fully comply with the Kirby Information Security Management System (ISMS).

Necessary requirements of the Senior Electrical Engineer
 

  • 3rd level Qualification in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 8 years engineering design/project management experience on power, renewables and grid connection installation projects
  • Professional and commercial acumen and be capable of representing Kirby at a senior level in meetings
  • Detailed understanding of HV, MV and LV network requirements including system resilience and studies requirements
  • Knowledge, experience and detailed understanding of current IS, BS, EN and IEC standards
  • Experience with energy management systems and integration of automated control systems to electrical networks
  • A proven track record of delivering projects on time and to budget
  • Experience of managing multiple projects at the one time
  • Strong IT skills
