Rights and obligations when working in Denmark

Residence as a Nordic citizen

As a Nordic citizen, you may enter Denmark without any restriction to reside, study or work. Although, if you come to work, you should acquire a tax card as soon as possible.

You do not need a residence permit nor an EU residence document.

If you plan to stay for more than six months you must register your address in the Civil Registration System (Danish: Folkeregister), and apply for a Civil Registration number (CPR-number) and a health insurance card. Find all the relevant information and who to contact right here.

Citizens from EU/EEA/Switzerland

Citizens from an EU/EEA country and Switzerland are entitled to live and work in Denmark.



You need to apply for an EU residence document within three months of arrival to Denmark (six months if you are a jobseeker). An EU residence document is your documentation that you are entitled to live and work in Denmark. It is recommended that you apply for an EU residence document as soon as you arrive in Denmark.

After receiving the EU residence document, you must apply for a Civil Registration number (CPR-number), a health insurance card and a tax card. You will find all the information needed here.

Citizens from a country outside of the Nordic region, EU/EEA or Switzerland

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need to obtain a residence and work permit before arriving in Denmark.

There are a number of schemes to be aware of such as “the positive list”, “the pay limit scheme”, “Researchers and guest researchers”, “The start-up Denmark” and more. 

If you have completed a Danish higher education programme and want to stay in Denmark and seek employment you can also apply for an establishment card. An establishment card is initially granted for 2 years.

The application process for a residence and work permit in Denmark is usually 1-3 months.

Cross-border-commuters

Workers who maintain their residence in another country than Denmark and travel to Denmark on a regular basis to work are considered as cross-border commuters.

If you are a cross-border commuter, you must look into the rules concerning work permit, tax registration, health insurance card, bank account, driving license and vehicle registration etc.

Posted workers

If you are posted to work in Denmark or you provide services as a foreign company, you must comply with the Danish regulations.

If you are posted to work in Denmark, and your employer is a foreign company temporarily providing a service in Denmark, you are covered by the Danish Act on Posting of Workers.
