The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions concerning the safety of food, feed and chemicals, as well as consumer health protection, on the basis of internationally recognised scientific evaluation criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). 

The following permanent position is to be filled with immediate effect in the Experimental Toxicology and ZEBET department at the BfR in the “Strategies for Toxicological Assessments” unit: 

 

Scientific Officer  

Reference number: 2194/2019 | Pay grade 14 BBesO 

 

Appointment as a civil servant will be made upon presentation of the prerequisites under civil service law and complete fulfilment of the qualifications profile.  

Part-time work is possible.  

Alternatively, the position can be filled by persons subject to the collective salary agreement (TVöD). 

Salary/pay will be commensurate with duties and qualifications. 

 

Duties: 

 

Development of toxicological assessment concepts under special consideration of the protection of laboratory animals, and support of the related experimental research. 

 

The individual duties are as follows: 

 

•  Coordination of national positions on new test methods and assessment strategies 

• Representation of prepared positions in international committees, primarily the EU and OECD

• Cross-unit development of concepts for toxicological risk assessment, especially under consideration of new molecular and cytological high content / high throughput approaches

• (Further) development of research projects

• Drafting of scientific publications 

 

Requirements: 

 

•  University degree (master’s, diploma) or comparable university degree) with doctorate in Biology, Chemistry, Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or comparable subject 

•  Practical experience of collaboration in national / international scientific committees

• Sound knowledge in the field of alternative methods to animal experiments, especially in the areas of (in vitro) toxicology and the development and/or validation of methods

• Knowledge of the development of test strategies and/or the integration of various data sets preferred

• Ability and authorisation to draft scientific opinions and publications independently

• Experience of the coordination of (inter) national, interdisciplinary projects preferred

• Experience of preparing applications for third party funding 

•  Very good written and spoken English

•  Good computer literacy as well as a conscientious work approach, flexibility, ability to work in a team and the ability to cope with pressure are prerequisites, as is willingness to travel on business 



The place of work is Berlin.
