Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Lyngby-Taarbæk, 1 stilling

The Department of Systems Biology at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as professor in Bacterial Physiology and Genetics. The position will be placed in our Bacterial Systems Microbiology section with about 30 staff members.

The purpose of bacterial science at the department is to identify and apply new ways of interfering with or exploiting bacterial systems of importance in biomedicine and industrial biotechnology. Our work is based on understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms that determines the physiology of the bacterial cell at different levels of organization – from individual cells to complex mixed-species communities. We explore a range of bacterial systems by classical microbiological and molecular techniques, bioimaging, and genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and metagenomic methods. Laboratory experiments are complemented by clinical and environmental microbiological surveys and are substantiated by mathematical modeling.

The section also teaches Bachelor, Master, and PhD students within the areas of biotechnology, bacterial physiology and genetics, and bacterial pathogenicity. The section has extended international and national collaborations including many industrial and academic partners.

Responsibilities and tasks

The position is available immediately and will carry responsibilities in both research and teaching. The applicant must have a strong research foundation in bacterial physiology, genetics and molecular biology and is expected to further strengthen these fundamental research areas. The position is also intended to develop and strengthen the section’s work on mixed complex communities, hence scientifically moving beyond single-species experimentation. The successful candidate is expected to take a lead position in this development through application of novel approaches, innovative technologies and a strong research program that will enable new strategies for control of pathogenic bacteria and exploitation of beneficial organisms.

The new Professor in Bacterial Systems Microbiology will be expected to enter into collaborative projects with groups from the Department and other relevant DTU Departments, and also to lead further developments of our engineering education within the area of bacteriology.

The successful candidate is expected to take a lead position in teaching at the bachelor-, master- and PhD levels.

Qualifications

Candidates are expected to have a record of internationally recognized research activities, successful acquisition and implementation of projects through externally reviewed third-party funding, publications in internationally recognized journals as well as a particular interest in teaching, together with high didactic qualifications and teaching experience.

Assessment

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

•the ability to teach

•scientific production at international level, research potential and ability to lead and develop a research team

•the ability to promote and utilize research results

•experience with innovation activities

•an all-round experience basis, including international experience

•the ability to contribute to the development of the Department’s internal and external cooperation

•track record in attracting funding to the research area

•visions within the research area

For the specific position consideration will also be given to:

•internationally recognized researcher within the area described above

•experience with mentoring young researchers

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
