The Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Estimator to join Glanua, a leading company in the water and wastewater industry. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing analytical and precise estimates for mechanical engineering works, ensuring that all proposals are technically accurate and carry an acceptable level of risk. The Mechanical Estimator will play a crucial role in the tendering process, working closely with design, project management, and procurement teams to develop cost-effective and innovative solutions that meet client specifications.

You will be instrumental in evaluating the buildability of designs, selecting appropriate materials, and identifying opportunities for innovation. Additionally, you will provide high-level pricing information at the early stages of tenders, aiding in the optioneering and budgeting processes to ensure that Glanua offers the most competitive and efficient solutions. This role requires a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, as well as a strong grasp of the latest industry trends and technologies.

As a Mechanical Estimator at Glanua, you will also ensure that all risk and governance procedures are rigorously followed and documented, contributing to the overall success and compliance of the project. Your expertise will support the development of tender preparation programmes, staff schedules, and procurement plans, all while maintaining high standards of accuracy and professionalism. The role demands excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines. Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The main duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Estimator are outlined as follows:

  1. Estimate Preparation:
  • Develop detailed and accurate estimates for mechanical engineering works based on outline drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure that estimates reflect a realistic level of risk and adhere to company guidelines and industry standards.
  1. Design Development Participation:
  • Engage in the design development process to evaluate buildability, material selection, innovative solutions, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide early-stage pricing information during tendering to assist in optioneering and budgeting, ensuring that the most cost-effective solutions are proposed.
  1. Risk and Governance Compliance:
  • Ensure all procedures, including risk management and governance processes, are followed, thoroughly documented, and properly authorised.
  1. Tender Preparation:
  • Contribute to the development of Tender Preparation and Tender Construction programmes.
  • Collaborate with other functions to prepare a detailed staff schedule for tenders, using insights from successful projects.
  1. Procurement Planning:
  • Work with central and regional buyers to prepare a procurement plan, identifying suppliers and subcontractors, and negotiating terms, conditions, and discount levels.
  • Prepare and send out enquiries to obtain competitive quotations for mechanical engineering resources, particularly materials and subcontractors.
  1. Technical and Industry Awareness:
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technical developments and new methods within the mechanical engineering industry.
  • Apply this knowledge to enhance the accuracy and competitiveness of estimates.
  1. Financial Modelling:
  • Develop financial models for framework submissions, including setting appropriate staff rates and ensuring these are aligned with project budgets.
  1. Cost Coding and Feedback:
  • Utilise the standardised cost coding system to enable meaningful feedback and future cost capture, ensuring consistency and accuracy in financial tracking.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Mechanical Estimator are outlined as follows:

  1. Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical estimating, preferably within the water, wastewater, or construction sectors.
  • Proven track record in preparing detailed and accurate mechanical estimates.
  1. Skills:
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and construction methods.
  • Proficiency in cost estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
