Assistant Professors (tenure tracks) / Associate Professors in Electrical and Computer Engineering



Department of Engineering (ENG), Aarhus University (AU) invites applications for a number of positions as tenure track assistant professors or associate professors in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). The University has ambitious plans to increase its activities significantly within research and education as well as public and industrial collaboration with the vision of bringing AU into the global engineering elite. Therefore, the University seeks exceptional innovative and visionary engineering researchers to be part of this build-up to strengthen and develop the ECE section at Aarhus University.



The positions are available from September 2016 or as soon as possible hereafter. Responsibilities include developing an innovative strategic research agenda together with colleagues and external partners, nurturing and leading excellent research activities, contribute to an inspiring and industrially relevant education at several levels (undergraduate, graduate) and expanding industrial collaboration.



These positions will support the vision of the University by extending and broadening the range of strong competences in electrical and computer engineering within the following key disciplines:



Electrical Engineering:



I. Computer Vision and Machine Learning
. In particular Computer Vision and Machine Learning related to Robotics and Autonomous Systems will be of interest.

II. Power Electronics. Power electronics with focus on converters and power systems including topics such as power devices, analysis and design of power circuits and hardware near control of power electronic systems.

III. Control and Automation. Control and automation engineering with emphasis on design, modelling and analysis of dynamic systems, e.g. in a mechatronics setting such as drones and robots.



Computer Engineering:



I. Software Architecture. Software engineering with focus on SW architectures, formal methods and development of tools for modeling and analysis, in particular for critical IT-based systems.

II. HW & SW co-design. Distributed computing systems/cyber-physical systems with emphasis on embedded HW-SW co-design including programmable HW structures.

III. Communications Networks. Concerns advancements of communication technologies and devices for secure, scalable and efficient information systems and their applications in network-centric designs and enabling of the Internet of Things.

IV. Big Data Analytics and Data Mining. Big Data Analytics focusing on Machine Learning at large scales and data mining, visual depictions of data from complex systems and application based data driven designs.



For each of these positions, it is crucial that candidates hold a deep understanding of real-world systems and applications in fields such as energy, healthcare, agriculture and industrial control.



The positions will be anchored in the department’s ECE section, and the candidates are expected to work closely with other researchers/groups within the section as well as with external stakeholders. The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team is essential.



Successful candidates must have a PhD in electrical/computer engineering or alternatively scientific expertise corresponding to one or several of the disciplines mentioned. The candidates must have excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Industrial relevant R&D experience is considered positive. Further expectations for the various levels of appointment are:



Assistant Professor: Candidates must demonstrate potential for outstanding research and teaching. Some postdoctoral training or similar is preferred.

Associate Professor: Candidates must have an outstanding record of research accomplishment, scholarly achievement, an established record of external funding (is preferred), and concomitant strong evidence of emerging leadership in their field.

In both cases the candidates are expected to be able to drive the build-up of internationally competitive research activities, and/or contribute to strengthening the current research activities. Commitment to excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels including existing courses and development of new courses is expected.

Also, a teaching plan/statement and a research plan (length of 2-3 pages each) are required. Also, please provide names of references (minimum 3) whom the search committee may contact directly. Finally, indicate level (assistant professor or associate professor) and discipline that you are applying for.

Application procedure

Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range

Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations. All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background.
