Mechanical Engineer for Safety

Contribute your mechanical engineering design skills and expertise in work safety to the world's largest particle physics laboratory in the world: CERN.

Mechanical Engineer integrating the Prevention & Safety Engineering Expertise Section (XP) of the Safety Engineering and Environment Group (SEE), part of the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE).

You will join:

  • The Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE), which supports the Organization in the implementation and enforcement of its safety policy, monitors the implementation and accomplishment of safety objectives aimed at a continuous improvement of safe working and operating conditions as well as environmental protection and grants safety clearance on behalf of the Director-General for special equipment, installations, experiments and projects with major safety implications.
  • The Safety Engineering and Environment Group (SEE), which offers safety services such as engineering expertise, training or independent control adapted to the needs of the Departments with the aim of enhancing prevention and ensuring that all safety aspects are integrated from the earliest stage of any project and that best safety practices are shared, harmonized and disseminated.

Functions

As Mechanical Engineer in the Prevention & Safety Engineering Expertise Section of DGS-SEE Group, you will take up the role of CERN specialist for mechanical Safety, joining a multidisciplinary team of Safety experts, covering several engineering domains.

Mechanical Safety covers Safety aspects of mechanical domains such as cryogenics, pressure equipment, handling & lifting equipment, welding, machinery, metallic structures and machine-tools.

For these fields, you will be asked to assist the Organization in defining, enforcing and monitoring the implementation of its Safety Policy.

As mechanical Safety expert, in your day-to-day work and for the afore-mentioned domains, you will:

  • Check and validate design calculations coming from different CERN technical departments.
  • Provide support in Safety risk assessment and risk control, audits and technical reviews.
  • Check the conformity to Safety requirements of engineering and tendering specifications.
  • Evaluate the integration of Safety requirements in engineering solutions provided by CERN technical departments.
  • Draft CERN Safety documentation including rules, instructions and guidelines.
  • Design and deliver Safety training related to all the mechanical domains.
  • Contribute to the projects/experiments Safety support activity of the DGS-SEE group for CERN projects follow-up, internally coordinating different Safety specialists in defining exhaustive Safety requirements for experimental facilities, installations and equipment.

Qualification required

  • Master's degree in the field of mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Extensive, proven experience of design & calculations of mechanical equipment & installations in one or more of the following domains: cryogenics, pressure, handling & lifting, machinery and machine-tools is essential. Proof of designs will be required.
  • Construction & commissioning supervision of the installations would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Finite Element methods and capability to carry out complex multiphysics Finite Element analyses.
  • Demonstrated practice of Finite Elements-based software packages (familiarity with ANSYS workbench is particularly appreciated): ability to assess the resistance and the performance of products /equipment parts /components /structures /welds etc. in order to verify their compliance to the applicable Safety requirements.
  • Demonstrated skills in compiling, publishing, and/or handling documents in a OH&S regulatory context would be an advantage.
  • Good knowledge of the European regulatory framework (directives and standards) in the fields of mechanical engineering.
  • Good knowledge of the European regulatory framework in the fields of mechanical Safety.
  • Safety risk assessment and management knowledge.
  • The knowledge of techniques, technologies and methodologies of manufacturing and construction in mechanical industry would be an advantage as well and the knowledge of OH&S legal issues.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Design of Mechanical systems: capability to design mechanical equipment or installations in one or more of the following domains: cryogenics, pressure, handling & lifting, machinery, metallic structures and machine-tools from the study phase to operation, including definition of the technical solutions, calculations, constructions, commissioning and functioning supervision (optionally dismantling).

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Achieving results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Solving problems: Producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements; identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
  • Working in teams: sharing and letting others participate in own work/project; encouraging team development.
  • Building relationships: being able to put self in the shoes of others in order to understand their needs and interests.

The language competencies required are:

  • English or French: spoken and written, with the ability to draw-up Safety documentation, reports and articles and/or to make oral presentations. The ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage.
