Kraftblock GmbH, based in Sulzbach/Saar and founded in 2014 by Dr. Martin Schichtel and Dr. Susanne König, develops and manufactures modular high-temperature thermal storage systems for industry and the energy sector. Their patented storage material – made up to 85% from recycled waste – can absorb heat from 350 °C to an impressive 1,300 °C. The stored energy, held in container-sized units, can be released as hot air, steam, thermal oil, or converted into electricity depending on the application.
The system uses waste heat or renewable electricity to replace fossil fuels in industrial processes. Kraftblock aims to decarbonize sectors such as steel, glass, chemicals, and food. One key project is a Net-Zero Heat System for PepsiCo in the Netherlands – the world’s largest commercial high-temperature storage unit, used in the production of Lay’s chips. Partnerships, such as with Mitsubishi Power Europe, are helping scale and deploy the technology further.
In short: Kraftblock provides a modular, scalable, and eco-friendly heat storage solution that enables industrial decarbonization – contributing directly to the heat and energy transition.
