The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions concerning the safety of food, feed and chemicals, as well as consumer health protection, on the basis of internationally recognised scientific evaluation criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). 

The following permanent position is to be filled with immediate effect in the Biological Safety department at the BfR in the National Reference Laboratory for Campylobacter in the “Food Microbiology, Pathogen-Host Interactions” unit:

Scientific Officer

Reference number: 2156/2018 I Salary group 14 TVöD 

 

Part-time work is possible. 

Duties: 

•  Deputy head of the National Reference Laboratory for Campylobacter

• Conception and execution of scientific research projects and the acquisition of third party funding

• Independent development, establishment and validation of methods 

• Independent performance of tasks within the scope of accreditation as head of testing

• Optimisation of laboratory processes, including the conception of simplified data maintenance in the electronic Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

• Support with the organisation of interlaboratory comparison

• Technical support of antimicrobial resistance monitoring

 • Service-oriented communication with customers (regional laboratories, ministries, consumer organisations, associations, research partners) and PR work 

• Involvement in national and international microbial risk assessment committees

• Publication of scientific data and drafting of specialised opinions

• Presentation of the national reference laboratory at national and international workshops • Supervision of postgraduates, international guest scientists, students and interns 



Requirements: 

•  University degree (master’s, diploma) or comparable university degree) with doctorate in Biology, Veterinary Medicine or comparable subject •  Scientific experience in different laboratories (preferably at different institutes) 

• Stay abroad as a guest scientist of advantage • Relevant experience of the successful acquisition of

third party funding (scholarships, research projects) and publication of scientific data in the peer review process 

• Extensive practical and theoretical knowledge of microbiology and molecular biological test methods, such as real-time PCR, sequence analysis, fluorescence microscopy, genetic engineering work and antimicrobial resistance determination

• Experience of dealing with human pathogenic bacteria, with ε-proteobacteria preferred

• Knowledge of food hygiene and microbiology matters and microbial risk assessment

• Proven knowledge of the handling of databases

• Willingness to assume responsibility in a team context and make a creative contribution towards shaping the future of the NRL

•  Very good written and spoken English

•  Good computer literacy as well as a conscientious work approach, flexibility, ability to work in a team and the ability to cope with pressure are prerequisites 

The place of work is Berlin.
