Work directly with the project manager to define a project's goals, objectives, budgets and schedules. Maintaining a high level of quality throughout the project life cycle can help ensure that the project achieves its goals and satisfies project leader expectations.
- Budgeting: Controllers create a budget that aligns with the project objectives and scope. This involves working closely with project managers and other team members to gather accurate information regarding the expected costs.
- Financial tracking: In this role, you regularly monitor the project's financial performance by comparing the actual expenditure against the budget. This enables you to identify any discrepancies and address potential issues promptly.
- Controlling costs: Implementing effective cost-control measures ensures that a project stays within budget. This typically involves renegotiating contracts with suppliers, suggesting alternative materials and methods, and finding ways to reduce expenses.
- Financial reporting: One of your duties as a controller is to prepare periodic financial reports, presenting detailed information on the project's financial status. These reports aid in decision-making for project managers, team members and clients.
- Managing risk: Identifying financial risks and developing strategies to mitigate them helps you prevent project setbacks. This generally involves preparing contingency plans, monitoring market trends and analyzing the financial stability of suppliers and subcontractors.
- Ensuring compliance: The controller ensures that a project complies with the relevant financial regulations and requirements. Regulations might include tax laws, accounting standards and company policies.
- Collaborating: This role requires you to collaborate with various team members, such as project managers, engineers and procurement professionals. Collaboration ensures that financial considerations integrate with project planning and execution.
