Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Lyngby-Taarbæk, 1 stilling

The Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in ultrafast nonlinear two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy for experimental and theoretical investigation of nonlinear vibrational coupling and broadening mechanisms in the low-frequency phonon spectrum of molecular crystals. Firm knowledge about such interactions is highly relevant for the understanding of energy dissipation in molecular systems, and in a broader perspective, towards an understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying strong-field induced effects to living systems.

Project description

The goal of the project is to study nonlinear interactions between the lowest-energy vibrational modes in organic molecular crystals, typically found in the low terahertz (THz) range. The project will build up firm knowledge about the nonparabolic shape of such low-energy vibrational potentials, as well as energetic coupling between modes. The project is based on experimental spectroscopy work with high-power femtosecond laser systems, ab-initio simulations based on density-functional theory (DFT), and numerical propagation of intense THz signals through model systems. The main topics the researcher will tackle within the project are:

•Experimental nonlinear 2D THz spectroscopy with intense THz pulses generated by femtosecond amplified laser systems and femtosecond parametric amplifiers.

•Ab-initio DFT and molecular dynamics simulations of the interaction between THz fields and specific molecular crystals.

•Precise numerical simulation of the interaction between intense THz field and resonant dielectric media with nonlinear response to the field.

The relative weight of the different aspects of the project will be determined in collaboration with the successful candidate. The project will be carried out in newly inaugurated state-of-the-art optics laboratories, using the newest generation of femtosecond amplifier technology.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in science or engineering. A solid background within one or more of the topics of nonlinear optics, experimental optics, femtosecond technology, quantum chemistry and electromagnetic simulation is important. Good communication skills in written and spoken English is a must. Incorporation date is winter 2015/2016.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. We recommend the applicants to contact the supervisors in advance to assess the suitability of the application.

Candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
