Job Description

Deliver projects to the client in a safe and very high-quality manner. Maintain and develop relationships with our key partners.  This role is primarily a management position but does have leadership elements to it.  The contracts managers/senior PMs; senior engineers; planners and various other personnel (as required by the circumstances) report directly to the operations manager.

  • You are the operational leader of the business unit, as such, you must drive the creation and execution of the vision for the business unit.
  • You must translate this vision into action across all projects.
  • Attend tender handover and project start up meetings; and drive improvements across the board.
  • Become familiar with all details and specifications of the contract.
  • Ensure full team understand roles with regards the projects.
  • Control multiple projects via the construction managers.
  • Ensure the creation and delivery of Commissioning Programmes.
  • Drive CMs and PMs to Manage RFI Process
  • Ensure adherence to all project SOPs, with specific focus on PEPs; Project Programme development and indicator management.
  • You are expected to be a mentor for the CMs and PMs on your team.
  • Ultimately responsible for driving control of project budgets via the CMs.
  • Ensure that operations and commercial work seamlessly together for the benefit of the business as a whole.

Additional Information

Reporting to the operations director, the operations manager has the responsibility for delivering a range of projects within the given region.  While the range of projects will likely have similarities such as a common client or project type, this will not always be the case.

Operations are required to deliver all aspects of project execution from the point of handover from the estimating team to the close-out of the project.  They also have an active role in preconstruction through support for business development and support for the estimating department.  Also, as operations have most direct interaction with the client, they are the ones that have most responsibility for maintaining and developing a positive relationship with those people.

The operations director’s role is primarily forward looking; and support for business development while overseeing the execution team within his or her region.  On the other hand the operations manager is responsibly for a 6-12 month look ahead and management of day to day delivery of projects, including, but not limited to:  Labour; materials; engineering staff and on-site safety and quality.

This position specifically requires a person with a very strong Mechanical understanding.  All operations managers are required to competently and confidently manage both mechanical and electrical scopes, however, this position requires mechanical strength.

Operations managers are required to report on their projects to the SBU meetings, and are responsible for delivery of all project goals.

Goals:

  1. Achieve or improve company targets TRIR
  2. Achieve RFT > 90% and RAH > 99%.
  3. Deliver an aggregate gross margin of an agreed Gross Margin across all projects
  4. Increase turnover year on year.
  5. S/E < 1.0 aggregate across projects.
  6. Actual blended labour rate < target blended rate.
  7. Deliver all project milestones ahead of schedule.
  8. Ensure zero impact to schedule due to material or supply chain issues.
  9. Zero unplanned works / uninstructed works.
  10. Zero impact to project delivery as a result of non-availability of direct or prelim personnel.
  11. Undesired turnover < 10% pa.
  12. Feedback received from 100% K&M Customers.
  13. Ensure Design is fit for purpose before it goes to construction /
  14. Ensure PM set up weekly meetings as required – attend bi weekly
  15. Know any project risks, inform SBU leaders
  16. Liaise with training centre on requirements for the sites (apprentices, skills)
  17. Complete PDRs for PM

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated track record of mechanical trade or Engineering Background.
  • Minimum of 10 years post qualification experience in Construction/Project Management
  • Proven experience in all aspects of project controls.
  • Demonstrate a proven ability to manage through people.  Formal or company based management training is required
