Region in the Central part of Italy, bordering to the north by Liguria and Emilia Romagna, to the south by Lazio, to the east by Umbria and to the western part by the Ligurian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea.

Landscape: The region is predominantly hilly, with some mountainous areas and coastal plains.

Population: Resident population on 1st January 2025: 3.660.834 (data by ISTAT- Italian National Statistics Institute). Women make up 51.4% of the resident population, primarily due to women's greater longevity.

Foreign resident population: There are 424.000 foreign citizens in Tuscany, 11.6% of the population. 146,000 foreigners have obtained Italian citizenship, the total number 570,000 residents in Tuscany have a migrant background, representing 15.6% of the whole Tuscan population (Social Regional Observatory of Tuscany – 2024).

 

PRINCIPAL CITIES

FIRENZE:  the capital city of the region, with a population of 362.353 inhabitants. Being an open air museum, tourism and services are by far the most important of the industries. The fashion and luxury sector is a key export industry, with districts specializing in leather, clothing, and footwear. The  manufacture and the agri-food sectors are also quite important. Typical Florentine craftsmanship, especially in the processing of leather and wood, is a distinctive sector.

PISA: the city of the Leaning Tower, with a population of 89.450 inhabitants. Thanks to its architecture (historic churches, and several medieval and Renaissance palaces) tourism is an important sector. Pisa is a center of excellence for robotics both with the production of robots and automated machines and in their use. The presence  of important universities fosters the development of the technology and research sectors, creating job opportunities and driving innovation.

AREZZO: with a population of 96.527 inhabitants known as the "City of Gold" for its centuries-old tradition and one of Italy's foremost gold and jewellery district; the fashion industry, textiles and leather, contributes to the local economy alongside the gold sector. The agricultural sector is a key component of Arezzo's economy, providing essential raw materials for the agro-industrial sector. There is a growing focus on quality production, environmentally friendly practices, and business diversification.

LIVORNO: an Italian port city on the western coast of Tuscany with a resident population of 152.916 inhabitants; renowned for its Renaissance fortifications, its modern cruise ship port, for trade and industry and its main tourism function linked to the sea . Its main sources of economic impact derive from the cruise industry: cruise ships construction and maintenance and investment in port infrastructures. 
Thanks to tourism other important sectors are: retail and wholesale trade followed by transport and warehousing services accommodation and catering services.

GROSSETO: located along the western coast of Tuscany with a resident population of 81.412 inhabitants;  the city is a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its Etruscan origins, Grosseto carries a rich historical heritage  that's reflected in its well-preserved architecture and historic sites. Its economy is strongly based on the tertiary sector, particularly with relation to tourism and commerce. Located in the naturalistic area of Marema, agriculture is one of the most important sectors of the local economy. Also notable is the Grosseto hub for agri-food industry and transformation, a regional reference point for the promotion and support of process and product research and innovation in the agricultural and agri-food sector.

LUCCA:  located in northwestern part of Tuscany with a resident population of 88.614 inhabitants; it is renowned for its intact Renaissance era city walls and its very well preserved historic center. The economic system of Lucca especially the manufacturing sectors contribute significantly to the economy of the whole region, such as the industry sector (paper, yachting, footwear, mechanical, chemical and pharmaceutical). Cultural activity is undoubtedly of fundamental importance to its economy. The vast number of works of art, magnificent churches, museums, city walls, and ancient history attract tourists from around the world making tourism and the tertiary activity important economic sectors.

MASSA: located in the northern part of Tuscany with a resident population of 65.801 inhabitants;  Massa and the neighboring Carrara are famous for their marble, which involves both extraction and processing. The marble trade sector is supported by a concentration of industrial and craft companies, tourism and tertiary particularly coastal tourism. Massa Carrara are quite famous for their museums and educational sites.  Carrara is the city of the marble quarries, where the sculptor Michelangelo got the marble for his famous scultures. The scenery is spectacular, but the wild extraction of recent times has greatly reduced the mountains causing serious environmental problems. 

PISTOIA: located in  the northern part of Tuscany, with a resident population of 88.943 inhabitants; its name derives from Latin "Pistôrĭum", meaning Etruscan city; the Ornamental Horticulture District, is worldwide famous for its production of ornamental plants, the highly fertile soil and the unique microclimate make it exceptionally well-suited for the horticulture industry. Ornamental horticulture companies are largely family-run, contributing 25% to the gross product of Tuscany’s agriculture and representing 5% of European horticulture. Export is quite fundamental for the local economy. Pistoia has made tourism a key factor for the local economy with facilities operating in the territory, together with tourism and tertiary related services and activities.

PRATO: located in the northeastern part of Tuscany, with a resident population of 198.326 inhabitants; it is considered one of the largest industrial districts in Italy, the largest textile center in Europe and one of the most important world centers for the production of woolen yarns and fabrics. The textile district of Prato is made up of thousands of companies in the fashion sector. Prato’s textile clothing district is the main reference point for many international fashion brands supply. It is also an important ICT district in software production, consulting and management of computerized structures. The ICT district of Prato, relying on the local availability of skills of research centers is a stimulating environment for professionals and companies in the ICT sector, making it a benchmark in Tuscany.

SIENA: located in the central part of Tuscany, with a resident population of 52.991 inhabitants; the city preserves its medieval historical centre intact worldwide famous for its traditional palio, an equestrian competition. Tourism is a key sector for the local economy, supported by Siena's status as a UNESCO World Heritage site and its rich artistic and cultural heritage. Siena was awarded with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) award, a highly coveted recognition in the world of eco-sustainable and responsible tourism. A significant and growing economic sector is biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, being Siena a hub for research and production. Of great importance for its economy is agriculture, with the surrounding area known for agricultural products and especially for the wine industry.

CULTURE AND EDUCATION

The great art centres and its medieval towns bear timeless witness to thousand years of history, culture and art. Tuscany has splendid endless museums (530 museums in 2022 according to ISTAT – Italian National Statistics Institute), full of ancient Etruscan and Roman ruins, medieval castles and Renaissance palaces.

The level of education in Tuscany has a significant impact on individuals' well-being across its many dimensions, including: lifestyle and social relationships, political participation, economic conditions, health status, cultural engagement, participation in the labour market and work-life balance.
