Job offer description

Haugesund Hospital is seeking a consultant gastroenterologist. The position will be available from autumn 2026.

Haugesund Hospital comprises a Medical Department (including paediatrics and neonatology), a Surgical Department (including obstetrics and gynaecology and fertility services), a Psychiatric Department, as well as departments of radiology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and pathology.

The Medical Department includes Internal Medicine with most medical specialties, in addition to neurology, rehabilitation, and a simulation centre for training and recertification. The department is certified and forms part of the training programme for junior doctors within internal medicine, nephrology, cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology, haematology, and geriatrics.
Within Internal Medicine, there are currently 16 doctors in training and 20 consultants.

Gastroenterology is organised under Medical Department A, which currently has 10 inpatient beds, five of which are designated for patients with gastroenterological diseases. A significant proportion of the department’s activity takes place in the outpatient clinic, where a wide range of procedures are performed, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), abdominal ultrasound, pH manometry, capsule endoscopy, and outpatient consultations for patients with gastroenterological and hepatological conditions such as hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and functional gastrointestinal disorders.

The department works closely with the Department of Surgery, performing procedures such as ERCP, endoscopic stenting, removal of large polyps, EMR, and ESD.

The Department of Gastroenterology covers most conditions within gastroenterology and hepatology and offers a strong professional environment. It currently comprises five consultant gastroenterologists, two junior doctors in gastroenterology training (registrar positions), and one junior doctor in internal medicine training. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the joint internal medicine on-call rotation, which includes on-call duties and, when required, work on other internal medicine wards.

There are plans for future expansion of the department, including participation in the national colorectal cancer screening programme. Consequently, additional gastroenterologist positions may be established over time.
