Haugesund Hospital comprises departments of medicine (including paediatrics and neonatology), surgery (including obstetrics, gynaecology, and fertility services), mental health care, and medical services (including radiology, clinical chemistry, and pathology). The Department of Medicine includes internal medicine with subspecialties in most disciplines, as well as neurology, rehabilitation, and learning, mastery, and coping centres. The department is accredited as a training site for internal medicine, nephrology, cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and geriatrics. An application for accreditation in haematology has recently been submitted.
The Department of Internal Medicine comprises 16 physicians in specialist training and 20 consultant positions.
Cardiology is organised within the Cardiology and Pulmonary Department, which is part of the Department of Medicine. The department currently has 16 inpatient beds, including six beds in an intermediate care unit (MIO). It covers most cardiac conditions, with the exception of invasive cardiology and certain highly specialised services. The position includes responsibility for pacemaker implantation for the entire Helse Fonna Health Trust.
The cardiology outpatient clinic has a high level of activity and is responsible for follow-up and monitoring of cardiac patients in the region. A recently established acute outpatient clinic provides rapid assessment and treatment for patients with suspected coronary disease. The department offers a highly professional environment at the forefront of cardiology. There are five consultant cardiologist positions, four of which are currently held by experienced cardiologists. The department is actively involved in education and training within internal medicine and cardiology and works closely with specialist cardiology and intensive care nurses. Participation in a shared internal medicine on-call rota is part of the position.
