Our engineering group located in Oulu and Helsinki needs more brainpower, and we are now looking for an experienced Android Developer to join our engineering team!

About the role

As an Android Developer at IndoorAtlas you have a unique opportunity to work on a groundbreaking technology on its way to power indoor location-based apps worldwide and bring forth new inventions.

Google Play lists over 10k different Android devices, and we work on about 3000 of them. We want to expand that list and make sure our tools work even better on future devices too and this is where you come along. You will be working as a device and sensor driver specialist Android Developer in close collaboration with our SDK lead and application developers. Your time will be spent on analyzing and implementing solutions which generalize what we might politely call “specialities” of various handsets and building a maintainable platform to managing these quirks. We want to be able to say that our product supports our customers’ and end users’ devices even before they are on the market. You will also contribute to making our product more power efficient and optimized.

Expectations for this position:

1) After the first 6 months:

• You’ve increased the number of handsets we support
• You’ve continued to generalize and future-proof our current device specific solutions
• Along with our research team, you’ve completed a framework for collecting device performance and functionality data to keep us up to date on variations in the market

2) After your first year:

• IndoorAtlas SDK is not just the most scalable and accurate indoor positioning solution on the market - it’s also the most power efficient one, thanks to your optimization skills
• We’ve made progress on supporting not just typical handsets, but also embedded and special purpose devices implementing similar sensors, networking and computational capabilities

Success factors in this role

Do you eat, sleep and breathe Android? Then this might be the job for you. You know mobile devices like the back of your hand and you are able to share your knowledge to others. You are detail-focused, patient and not get easily frustrated by hardware quirks. This is a role you love, otherwise you would probably hate it. You will be a member of our SDK team and your role requires you to develop specific, focused expertise not common to Android app developers.

You will also be working closely with engineers in two locations, Helsinki and Oulu. You need to enjoy being part of a distributed team in order to like this position. As every start-up on its way to the top, we have quick turns and big objectives. If that scares you, you are probably better off in a more established company.

This is what we are looking to find in your application:

• Knowledge of Android core functionality related to sensors
• Low-level understanding of device drivers
• C++ skills will prove useful in this role due to need to dive below the usual layers
• Start-up background or other demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Good communication skills combined with self-direction
• An example of a tool, app or service you have created independently
• Curiosity to learn new technologies
