Descripción de la oferta de empleo

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Lyngby-Taarbæk, 1 stilling

DTU Fotonik, the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a candidate for a three year PhD position in the field of electronic bandstructure of two-dimensional materials using the k.p method. The position is part of a research project funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research on the theoretical exploration of symmetry effects as well as strain, electric field, magnetic field, spin effects, and material inhomogeneity of two-dimensional materials. DTU Fotonik is one of the largest centers in the world focusing solely on research in photonics, covering the fields of lasers, LEDs, optical sensors, optical fibers, optical communications, nanophotonics and quantum photonics.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD project seeks to derive the general electronic bandstructure of all 2D materials using the method of invariants including spin effects. This has partially been accomplished for graphene and silicene but we will extend the analysis to all 17 2D plane groups and, specifically, for BN and MoS2 including contributions to second- and third-order in the k-vector. Strain, electric and magnetic fields will be included in theanalysis. Following the determination of symmetry-allowed terms in the effective k.p Hamiltonians, comparison with experimental results and DFT ab-initio calculations allows the k.p band parameters to be obtained.

Qualifications

Candidates should have

•A MSc degree or equivalent in theoretical or computational physics

•Strong analytical skills preferably with a background in theoretical solid state physics

•Interest in collaborating with experimental groups

•A strong drive and good communication skills

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
