Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position for the development of calibration objects and methods for ensuring traceable CT metrology

Description: You will develop well-defined reference objects in view of traceability establishment. Progress is envisaged in terms of all relevant aspects, including design, manufacturing and calibration of reference objects. Procedures and reference objects will be developed in particular for testing of specific CT metrological characteristics that have not been fully studied yet, such as metrological structural resolution. Specific calibrated workpieces resembling production items will also  be developed for task-specific uncertainty evaluation. A detailed analysis of the sources of measurement errors using calibrated reference objects will be the basis to assure the traceability of CT measurements as well as to develop new criteria for determining optimum CT measurement parameters (e. g. number of projections, integration time, etc.). This will help to eliminate the need for an advanced user expertise to choose appropriate parameters for high accuracy CT measurements. The research will contribute also to the development of internationally accepted standard procedures for metrological performance verification and uncertainty determination of CT dimensional measurements. To this end, meetings will be organized with several CT manufacturers and expert users of CT dimensional metrology systems, including the numerous partners already involved in the International Network of CT Dimensional Metrology (which was established by UNIPD during the “CT Audit” project, participated by national metrology institutes, CT manufacturers, research centres and industrial users in Europe, America and Asia). In collaboration with ESR 4, 6, and 7, several studies will be undertaken, including: (i) development of new procedures for correct comparison of CT data with CMM data; (ii) development of advanced procedures for alignment of CT data to reference measurements and nominal CAD models; (iii) comparison of specific CT measurements to optical and tactile CMM measurements; (iv) development of calibration and verification procedures similar to those already used for CMMs; development of methods for traceable freeform measurements, adapting innovative methods that were developed at University of Padova for CMM measurements.

Secondments: During this project, you will do a secondment (of a few months) to DTU (Denmarks Tekniske Universitet, Denmark), PTB (Physikaltisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Germany) and Nuovo Pignone (Italy)

Duration: 36 months (enrolment in a PhD program at UNIPD)

Envisaged job starting date: between November, 1st 2013 and March, 31st 2014
