Meliora Bio is part of Torque Kapital and is based in Kalundborg. We strive to work towards sustainable production and always aim to impact consumers and the environment in a positive way. In short, we are a modern biorefinery that upcycles straw into a range of valuable and innovative products.

We are a medium-sized company with about 60 employees. We started our plant in 2020, and a brand-new factory section was added in 2023.

We thrive on and are motivated by product innovation, technology development, and incremental improvements that support sustainable product development, green energy transition, reduced CO2 footprint, and reduced energy consumption. We continuously search globally for exciting new technologies and ideas that we as a company can support and help bring to market.

What we do:

Meliora Bio produces bioethanol, prebiotics, and lignin based on straw, with a focus on minimal energy and water consumption while reducing production waste to zero. At the same time, we aim for the lowest possible CO2 footprint.

Advanced Biofuel:

Advanced bioethanol is made from straw, enzymes, and yeast with a very low CO2 footprint. Bioethanol made from agricultural waste is used for a wide range of applications, currently the work is focused on blending it with gasoline for car fuel. This mix will result in a 1:1 reduction of 90 percent CO2 emissions from the car. This is not new, as ethanol is already blended with gasoline today, but this ethanol is made from raw materials like corn and sugarcane and thus has a lower CO2 offset. When you use Meliora Bioethanol, the food-for-energy challenge is solved.

Prebiotics:

Prebiotics are produced using other parts of the same local wheat straw for the extraction of hemicellulose. This production further benefits the farmers we collaborate with by creating additional demand for straw and improving circularity in the food chain.

Lignin:

The natural lignin content in the straw is extracted in the biorefinery and is currently used to produce green energy (steam) for our production. Lignin has significant future potential as a replacement for polymers in several applications. Meliora Bio is involved in multiple development projects to deliver on this potential in the future.
