General Hospital Celje is the third largest hospital in Slovenia and serves as an interregional medical center. In accordance with its statutory authority, it provides healthcare services primarily at the secondary level, and partly at the primary and tertiary levels, offering both specialist outpatient and inpatient care. It is the only hospital in the Savinja region that ensures continuous specialist medical services.

The hospital serves up to 300,000 residents from the wider Celje area, representing between 12 and 15 percent of Slovenia’s population. In addition to its public healthcare role, it also carries out certain market-oriented activities.

Given its scope and responsibilities, General Hospital Celje plays a vital role within the Slovenian healthcare system—particularly as it performs part of its activities at the tertiary level, even though such services are not officially designated as tertiary. Through its work, the hospital has a major impact on the accessibility, quality, and efficiency of healthcare services in the Savinja region and across the country.

With a long-standing tradition of hospital care, General Hospital Celje is recognized both nationally and internationally for its excellence in several medical specialties. Some departments are also distinguished by their research focus and their important educational role as a teaching hospital.
