Who are we looking for?  

We’re looking for a talented software developer/designer to boost our growing Online Data Services team. You’ll have the opportunity to design data services and develop them in our High Performance Computing (HPC), Grid, Cloud and Big Data (Hadoop, ES) infrastructure.

What will your tasks be?  

  • Designing and building services to support the life cycle of research data in a scientific e-infrastructure;
  • Researching and solving problems related to performance and scalability;
  • Coordinating and managing software developments at SURFsara and our projects;
  • Participating on behalf of SURFsara in national and European projects related to data management;
  • Contributing to open source projects;
  • Contributing to solutions related to data storage;
  • Communicating effectively in an organisation with multiple groups supporting each other.

What are we looking for?  

We require the following for this role: 

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following programming or script languages: Python, Perl, Ruby, C, C++, Java, PHP;
  • Knowledge of Linux;
  • Experience of web programming;
  • Ability to translate functional requirements into technical requirements;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to carry out out several tasks at once.

Some pre-conditions  

  • Do you have a passion for web infrastructure, cloud services, next generation storage services or scaled or distributed service architectures? Have you made solid contributions to scientific research? That’s something we greatly value at SURFsara.
  • Can you publish and present your work at conferences or in blog form? Have you published articles and books? That would offer clear added value to us.

What do we offer?

  • Depending on experience you will be on the 10/11 pay scale with a salary of 2,476 to a maximum of 4,551 euros per month (gross) on a full-time basis (38 hours per week). 8% holiday allowance, fixed 8.3% year-end bonus. 29 days' holiday per year, and if you work an extra 2 hours per week (40 hours in total) you will have 41 days' holiday. Commuting allowance for up to 45 kilometres one-way;
  • The appointment is for an initial period of 1 year.

SURFsara provides a full range of services in the field of High Performance Computing (HPC), Networking, Data Services, Visualisation, e-Science Support and Cloud Services. We work closely with the academic community, the private sector and SMEs. SURFsara is also a partner in national and international projects such as LOFAR, EGI, WLCG/LHC, EUDAT and PRACE. Since 2013, SURFsara has been part of SURF, the ICT organisation for higher education and research in the Netherlands.
