SURFsara is seeking a candidate for the position of (Senior) Advisor/Scientific Programmer to strengthen the Supercomputing Group and the Computing Group Cluster.

 

Job description

The purpose of the position is to provide effective support to research scientists in academia and industry by developing and adapting software (performance optimisation and scaling) on both the national supercomputer and the national computing cluster, and to participate in national and international projects. The activities may also take place at the researcher's workplace.

Scope of activities

Users of the national high-performance computing infrastructure mainly consist of researchers at Dutch universities and research institutes. Demand from these users is distributed across two different systems: Cartesius and Lisa. Cartesius is the current national supercomputer and features over 40,000 cores and 132 GPUs, and a peak performance of 1.6 PFlop/s. The national computing cluster, Lisa, currently has almost 8,000 cores. Lisa has a peak performance of 149 TFlop/s and is regularly updated with new hardware.

 

Job requirements

Your academic training and professional experience are as follows:

  • affinity with scientific research in chemistry, physics, computing science or astronomy 
  • knowledge of Unix/Linux;
  • programming experience (at least Fortran and/or C);
  • parallel programming experience (at least MPI and OpenMP);
  • knowledge of scripting languages (such as shell scripting, Python and Perl);
  • knowledge of various (parallel) computer architectures;
  • excellent written and oral communication skills.

Additional preferences:

  • Experience in GPU/GPGPU programming (CUDA and/or OpenCL) and/or Intel Xeon Phi programming; or experience in using packages such as GROMACS, VASP, etc.
  • Experience in OpenACC and/or PGAS languages recommended.

Competencies required for this job include a customer-centric attitude, independence, the ability to take initiative and to work in a team, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a good command of the Dutch and English languages, both written and oral.

 

Terms of employment

Salary: depending on expertise and experience, scale 10/11 (EUR 2,476 – EUR 4,551 gross per month), progression to scale 12 ( EUR 5,171 maximum gross per month) for a Senior Advisor/Scientific Programmer. The working week is 38 hours. 8% holiday allowance, fixed 8.3% year-end bonus. Holiday entitlement is 29 days a year (full-time basis). By working an additional 2 hours per week (40-hour working week), the holiday entitlement can be increased by 12 days. Commuting allowance up to a maximum of 45 kilometres (one-way journey). ABP pension (the Dutch public and education sector pension fund). The appointment is for an initial period of 1 year.

SURFsara provides a complete package of services in High-Performance Computing, Networking, Data Services, Visualisation, e-Science support and Cloud services. We work closely with the academic community (including researchers, education institutions and university medical centres) and industry.

SURFsara works with SURFnet and SURFmarket to optimally design the national ICT infrastructure and make expertise available. We are also a partner in national and international projects, such as PRACE, Fortissimo, LOFAR, EGI, WLCG/LHC and EUDAT. These projects engage the most powerful computers and supercomputers in Europe and use data storage systems to store Petabytes of scientific data.
