Job offer description

Mechanical Engineer

Are you looking for a job that offers new challenges on an almost daily basis? CERN is looking for a mechanical engineer interested in following a product through its lifecycle from design to operation. Come discover a variety of challenges, projects and develop skills. Come help us discover the new boundaries of particle physics. Take Part!

You will join:

  • The Engineering Department (EN) that provides engineering competencies, infrastructure systems, and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
  • The Mechanical & Material Engineering Group (MME) that provides specific engineering solutions for CERN, combining mechanical design, production facilities and material sciences support.
  • The Engineering Design and Simulation Section (EDS), which is in charge of the design of magnets, collimators, beam instrumentation and other components for CERN colliding machines.

Functions

As a Mechanical Engineer in the EDS Section, you will follow the design and construction of equipment for accelerators and detectors. Upgrading existing equipment will be one of your tasks as well as developing new devices for future machines. Superconducting technology, use of non-conventional materials, finite element computations of dynamic phenomena, safety, reliability, ultra-high vacuum technology are just a few of the key words related to this position.

You will:

  • Carry out mechanical and thermo-mechanical calculations using FEM software packages.
  • Design components for accelerators and detectors.
  • Write technical specifications, perform market surveys and price enquiries to find appropriate suppliers.
  • Follow-up on the production in CERN workshops and in industry.
  • Commission and maintain the equipment.
  • Supervise students and/or fellows when necessary.
  • Supervise technical staff for prototyping, series production, and follow-up of supply contracts.

Qualification required

  • Master's degree in the field of mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated experience as a Mechanical Engineer in industry or research centers, preferably in a large spectrum of technical activities, including follow-up of projects from the design to the construction and commissioning phases.
  • Demonstrated experience with finite element computations and computer aided design.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Design of mechanical systems: involving precise tolerances and uncommon materials.
  • Precision assembly and construction: organizing, planning and controlling prototype manufacturing.
  • Commissioning & maintenance of mechanical equipment & systems.
  • Use of Scientific and Engineering software packages: AnsysTM computation package or similar finite element programs; CAD tools, preferably CATIATM.
  • Use of Office software packages.
  • Knowledge of safety norms concerning pressure vessels, lifting equipment and machinery would be an advantage.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting. Taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen. Remaining objective, focussed and productive in a stressful environment, focusing on solutions rather than problems.
  • Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
  • Working in the interest of the Organization: demonstrating motivation for own work, being enthusiastic, involved and energetic in pursuing tasks.

The language competencies required are:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and scientific reports and to make oral presentations in English.
