Job offer description

Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and STMicroelectronics invite highly motivated graduates to apply for a 3-year industrial PhD scholarship starting in December 2022 or soon thereafter.

STMicroelectronics (ST) has 46,000 employees that are creators and makers of semiconductor technologies mastering the semiconductor supply chain with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. More than 8.000 peoples are working in R&D. ST is an independent device manufacturer, that work with more than 100,000 customers and thousands of partners to design and build products, solutions, and ecosystems that address their challenges and opportunities, and the need to support a more sustainable world. The technologies developed enables smarter mobility, more efficient power and energy management, and the wide-scale deployment of the Internet of Things and 5G technology. The Electronics group at DTU Electro is globally recognized for the excellence of its research, innovation and scientific advice on high-efficient high-power-density switch mode power supplies, high frequency magnetic components, and renewable energy power applications, as well as wireless charging system.

Responsibilities and tasks

Advances in power electronics technology has a great potential to improve energy efficiency, industrial productivity, and product quality, as well as creating jobs for the welfare of society and help to build a sustainable future. It is believed that the next level of improvement in power electronics will come from high frequency integrated power electronic modules, which enable greater integration and standardization within power electronics systems and their end-use applications especially for applications where space is highly restricted such as electric vehicle, aerospace, portable electronic devices and computer system etc.

Magnetic components (inductors and transformers) are key elements in realizing energy conversion, and they are responsible for much of the size, the power loss, as well as the cost. This research is therefore focused on the design and optimization of planar magnetic components to reduce losses and sizes of the power converters, as well as PCB embedded magnetics integration. These technologies combined with latest semiconductors innovations will allow the design of novel high density power electronics systems. Your tasks include design of power converter circuits and magnetic components, as well as prototyping, measurements and tests, using latest power semiconductors technologies.

Qualifications and Requirements

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Any candidate who:

  • has good grasps of multiple power circuit topologies for AC-DC and DC-DC;
  • has good experience in magnetic components design and optimization;
  • has good experience in analog design
  • is familiar with power semiconductor devices selection and characterization or power packaging;
  • has good experience in PCB schematic and layout;
  • is familiar with one or some of the following simulation tools such as MATLAB & Simulink, PLECS, PSpice, Ansys(Maxwell, Q3D), Altium and Orcad;
  • is familiar with embedding programming;
  • has good experience in making laboratory prototypes, debugging and testing power electronic circuits;
  • is target-oriented, structure thinking, eager to learn new things and ready to think outside the box;
  • is able to use communication skill in English at a good level;

will be considered as a candidate with favorable background. The candidate with highly self-motivation and enthusiasm, and is able to work under a great tension would be preferred.
