The role The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical and HVAC systems in the world. Facilities Technicians on this team operate, monitor and support all facilities activity at Google's data centers. You take ownership of the operation and maintenance of water pumps and treatment systems, HVAC, UPS, generators, electrical distribution and control and monitoring Systems. You're at the forefront of best-in-class environmental practices. You bring the ideas of our Data Center Engineers to life and develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving efficiencies. You ensure that problems are identified and repaired quickly, that contractors deliver quality services and preventive maintenance, and that safety measures are being performed. In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you respond to data center performance issues and outages to minimize the recovery time from failures. Through your leadership, you leverage your technical expertise to oversee the entire scheme of operations for a datacenter. Working with both Googlers and vendors, you assign activities and tasks as you plan and execute projects with other datacenter managers. While based in Hamina, the project locations are spread across Europe. Key team members are located in many countries in Europe and in the US. Managing stakeholders located across all these regions and time zones is a significant challenge and is key to the success of the projects. Responsibilities - Manage multiple simultaneous data center construction projects from inception through completion. - Support special Research and Development experiments, renovations, and upgrades of existing facilities. - Facilitate reviews and help resolve issues with cross-functional groups and external firms. - Demonstrate superior performance in resolving highly-critical issues within matrix organization while maintaining rigorous adherence to project timelines and costs. - Develop and maintain strong functional relationships across a large geographical area. Minimum qualifications - BA/BS or degree-level qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial or Construction, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred qualifications - MS or PhD degree. - Extensive experience managing complex, multi-group, multi-disciplinary projects. - Experience with Data Center equipment/environments, including switch gear, generators, UPS, chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, controls, security monitoring systems, fire safety systems and a working understanding of start-up/commissioning processes. - Experience managing vendor relationships and understanding of standard practices in the design and construction industry, including knowledge of fast-track design build process and associated documents and contracts. - Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and an additional European language. - Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time.
