The Role:

You will work as part of our multi-disciplinary engineering team to bring water and wastewater projects from initial design, through to completion and handover to the client. You will have the opportunity to work alongside, and collaborate with, industry-leading project teams, working in a one-team culture while broadening your own skill set.

As an Automation Engineer you will be expected to design, program and deliver a wide variety of multi-disciplinary projects as part of an engineering team, primarily in the Water, Wastewater and Energy sectors. As part of the Automation Team in Glanua you will have the opportunity to focus and develop your skills through the complete lifecycle of projects from tendering through to commissioning and testing. You will be presented with the autonomy to develop ideas, grow skill sets and introduce innovative technologies in a constantly evolving area.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The main duties and responsibilities of the Automation Engineer are outlined as follows:

  • Work as part of a team in the delivery of one or more projects at any one time, embracing the ethos of a “one team” culture.
  • Ensure Health, Safety, Environmental & Sustainability standards, policies, and procedures are always adhered to on-site.
  • Be familiar with the HSQE management system and procedures in conjunction with the current statutory requirements.
  • Perform the functional design of PLC Architecture, Networks and Communications interfaces using standard hardware and software components.
  • Develop Functional and Design Specifications Documents from Design Briefs and Control Philosophies.
  • Build and test PLC code to a high standard based on a Functional Specification.
  • Develop and build HMI platforms to control automated systems.
  • Design and develop SCADA applications for complete plants along with modifications to existing system to incorporate new control.
  • Work alongside a multidiscipline team of engineers for project duration.
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to project delivery teams during system design, implementation, and testing.
  • Present solutions for technical issues arising in control systems.
  • Develop documentation and perform FAT and SAT as part of a project sign-off with client.
  • Plan and implement all associated engineering tasks within a project to ensure time, cost, and quality targets are adhered to.
  • Apply and develop engineering standards as part of the Automation Team.
  • Work with key suppliers to ensure optimal use of available technologies and components.
  • Ability to perform fault finding on highly automated systems.
  • Schedule and prioritise tasks across assigned projects while working to tight timelines.
  • Liaise with relevant consultants, subcontractors, site staff, commercial resources and the general site team involved in the project.
  • Keep appraised of the latest standards and technology through continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Show an eagerness to learn and progress in your own career as well as the mentoring and training of more junior staff. Glanua has a proven track record of developing graduates from college through to director level within the organisation.
  • Other duties as required from time to time.
Job requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Automation Engineer are outlined as follows:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a similar role, preferably in the water and wastewater industry or similar.
  • Degree or equivalent in Automation Engineering or related field, demonstrating a high Automation, Control & Instrumentation content.
  • An interest in developing a career within an industry-leading organisation.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in project delivery and provide input at team meetings.
  • Proficient in programming in one of the following platforms: Rockwell, Schneider, Mitsubishi or Omron.
  • Experience in communication protocols and networks such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, DeviceNet.
  • Experience in programming and designing SCADA systems, such as Ignition, AVEVA, Iconics or Vijeo Citect.
  • Experience in commissioning VSDs and instruments and integrating into control systems.
  • Experience in on-site commissioning.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, communication (written, verbal and telephonic), presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to use own initiative, problem solve and adjust as issues arise during project delivery.
  • Good working knowledge of MS packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills with a high level of motivation.
  • Full driving licence.
