The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) is the public institution entrusted with implementing Portugal’s national and European public policies on migrations. Its mission encompasses promoting inclusive migration governance, ensuring the protection of refugees and asylum seekers, and fostering social cohesion.

The Agency also plays an active role in international cooperation on migration and asylum, promotes integration, and ensures that foreign nationals are treated fairly and without discrimination, with their full rights safeguarded under the Constitution and the law. It is further responsible for regulating the entry and residence of foreign nationals in Portugal and for managing national migration information systems, interconnected with European databases.

In addition to policy implementation, the Agency provides practical information and services for those who wish to live, study, work, or invest in Portugal. Among key integration-related initiatives is the promotion of Portuguese language learning for foreign residents.
